Carmelo Gonzalez Iglesias (Havana, 1920-1990) Painter and engraver. In 1938, he attends the Free Studio for Painters and Engravers. From 1939 to 1945 he attended the San Alejandro School. The next year he makes his first individual exhibition in the Reporters Association of Havana. Due to his academic results he obtained in 1946 a traveling bag to continue studies in the United States. By that time he joins the Art Student League of New York, where he stays until 1947. He returns to Cuba and works as an engraving and drawing professor in Leopoldo Romañach School of Arts of Santa Clara for ten years. He develops an admirable work within the teaching in San Alejandro (1958-1962), the National Art School of Cubanacán (1962-1964) and the National Design School of Havana. Due to his work in rescuing the incisive art by the end of the forties, he found in December of 1949 the “Engraving Association of Cuba”, an organization of which was the chairman and main promoter. One of the contributions of this chairmanship was the conception of mural or monumental engraving. Among his distinctions stand out the third prize awarded to him during the 3rd National Painting and Sculpting Exhibition for his oil “Simbolismo”, in 1946 and the second prize in engraving obtained in 1949 at the Fine Arts Circle of Havana. He also won the golden medal in the same art expression in the Tampa University, Florida, in 1951.
