Domingo Ravenet, born in 1905, has a similar training to that of many of his contemporaries. In 1923 he enrolled in the elementary subjects of San Alejandro School, from which he soon drops out. In 1925, he appears alkong with Pogolotti, Enríquez, Abela, Acosta, Peláez and Navarro, among others, in the Fine Arts Exhibit, an immature start of the first modern preoccupations of the young Cuban artists. As of that moment he becomes a militant in the struggle for the “new art”. In 1927 he travels to Paris- with occasional trips to Spain. He lives, studies, paints and exhibitspuntil 1933. Europe represents for him the true realization of all the potentials that Casanovas saw in him. Upon his return to Cuba in1934, he is one of the most active figures of his generation, devoted not only to different kinds of works – painting, engraving, sculpture, murals, ceramics – covering a wide variety of themes and ranges, and interested in formal experimentation, but also in other promotion tasks. He illustrates books; is an active participant and promoter of mural experiences (such as that of the Santa Clara teachers college in 1937) and organizes expositions, among them the anthological ones, 300 Years of Art in Cuba (1940) and Exposition of Contemporary Cuban Art (1941). He held 16 personal expositions and participated in 39 collective ones (in Cuba and abroad). Between 1937 and 1959 he made 12 fresco murals for public buildings or private homes. In 1934, he made incursions into engraving in wood and, in the seventies, into lithography. He illustrated books for three decades. In the fifities, he was devoted mainly to sculpture and ceramics, without abandoning painting. Among his prizes are: Ligeia (First Painting and Sculpture Exhibit of 1935) and Gold Diploma to Fuente de las Antillas (Fountain of the Antilles) (1949). His works can be found in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in thel National Museum of Fine Arts in Cuba, in the Castillo de la Real Fuerza of Havana and in the Municipal Museum of La Lisa. Also in private collection in Cuba and countries like the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland, France, Canada, United States, Russia, and Spain.
